Visiting With Your Optometrist Right Away

I have never been much of a worrier, but when I started experiencing light flashes and floaters in my vision, I knew that something had to be wrong. I was dealing with sudden and unexplained eye pain, and I was concerned about what it might mean for my vision. Instead of ignoring the issue, I headed straight to the eye doctor's office to get the help that I needed. They carefully evaluated the issue, and my doctor told me that I had detached retinas. This blog is all about saving your vision through quick and efficient actions and knowing how to get the help that you need.

Learn How To Care For Your Eyes

While your eyes require very little maintenance in order to keep them healthy, there are still some things you should do. The more effort you put into taking care of your eyes, the less chance you will have of developing certain problems. Learn about some of the things you should do regarding your eyes by reading this article.

Wear sunglasses outside

Just as how the sun's UV rays can increase your chances of developing skin cancer, they can also put your eyes at risk of developing such eye problems as cataracts, photokeratitis, pterygia, and macular degeneration.  Too much sun can also make your eyes feel uncomfortable for a while after you are out in it.

You can help prevent the development of these things from happening by wearing the right type of sunglasses. You want to go with ones that offer you good UV protection and are tinted in a shade that you find to be pleasing. You can find sunglasses with brown, gray, blue, green, yellow, orange and other shades of tint. Also, make sure the sunglasses cover a large enough portion of your eyes so you know that they are working to block out those harmful rays.

Even if you don't wear sunglasses on a daily basis, you should make sure you wear them when your risk of eye damage is increased. Some examples of these times would be anytime when you are in a higher altitude, when you are visiting a location that's closer to the equator and when you are taking medications that make your eyes more sensitive.

Give your eyes a break

If you spend a lot of time looking at fine print close up, such as when you are reading a book or on the computer, then you should give your eyes a break throughout that time period. This way, your eyes won't get dried and irritated, which can cause you to constantly rub them, increasing your chances of scratching them.

Protect your eyes from debris

Just as how you want to protect your eyes from the sun, you also want to protect when you are out in extreme winds by wearing sunglasses. This way, you won't have to worry about dirt and other debris scratching your cornea. You also want to make sure you wear protective glasses in certain situations, such as when you are around wood sawing or metal grinding.

Get your eyes examined annually

You want to make sure you go in for your regular eye exams. This way, you can start wearing glasses early on if there is a shift in your vision. You may need bifocals as well, they will help you to read fine print. There is no reason to suffer through vision problems when glasses and possibly bifocal lenses can help you see the way you should.

Choose good glasses

If you need to wear corrective lenses, you want to make sure you choose glasses that fit you comfortably and that you will be fine with wearing on a daily basis. You can purchase high fashion eyewear if you want to make a statement with your glasses. You should also have an anti-scratch coating and a tint applied to the lenses.
